Objective: To establish baseline data for patients admitted to inpatient rehabilitation unit with diagnosis of stroke, brain injury or spinal cord injury utilizing a newly constructed research database. This work will serve as a proof of concept of a data mining effort to build a database that houses outcomes data on these neurorehabilitation patient populations.
Design: Retrospective chart review Setting : Academic Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (IRF) Participants : All patients admitted to inpatient rehabilitation facility with diagnosis of stroke, traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury since June 2018.
Interventions: Not applicable
Main Outcome Measures: Berg balance scale, 6-minute walk test, 10-meter walk test, timed up and go, activities-specific balance confidence scale, functional gait assessment, FIM efficiency, length of admission, discharge destination
Results: The initial data pull included 167,648 discrete data points. After filtering extraneous data points, we gleaned outcomes data from 533 patient who met criteria for inclusion in the database. Statistical analysis is forthcoming as we continue to mine and clean the data. Conclusions: These baseline data provide proof of concept that creating a neurorehabilitation patient center outcomes research database is achievable utilizing our electronic medical record, a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliant data extraction tool, and a custom written algorithm for data reduction. This proof of concept also demonstrates that this research is feasible financially, as these tools are readily available at low or no cost to our IRF. Ultimately, this will provide the basis for data visualization and predictive outcomes capability. As we integrate trends and conclusions from the data model, we hope to improve care and outcomes for our patients admitted to IRF with a neurorehabilitation diagnosis.
Level of Evidence: Level II
