Disclosures: Olga Komargodski, MD: No financial relationships or conflicts of interest
Objective : The study aimed to determine whether after-hours admission to an inpatient rehabilitation hospital affected the pediatric patients’ functional outcomes.
Design: The study population was divided into two groups. Early admission was defined from 7 am to 5 pm. Late admission from 5 pm to 7 am. Cut off time of 5 pm was chosen because the on-call team was in charge of admissions afterward. The groups were further divided into neurological and general rehabilitation.
We report descriptive statistics and utilized two-sample tests including t-tests as well as logistic and log-linear regression. We tested if a diagnosis (neurological vs general) modified the association of after-hours admission with outcomes using Wald tests of interaction in statistical models.
Setting : Acute inpatient pediatric rehabilitation unit
Participants : We conducted a historical cohort study of all 243 pediatric patients admitted to inpatient rehabilitation between 2014 and 2018.
Interventions: n/a
Main Outcome Measures:
Main Outcome Measures: Length of Stay (LOS), Functional Independence Measurement (FIM), Discharge setting
Results: There were no differences in age, gender and functional scores at admission between patients admitted before and after 5 pm. There was no association of LOS with being admitted after hours (p>0.10) or with being discharged home (p>0.10). There was no change in FIM scores (p>0.10). This association was not modified by a neurological diagnosis (p>0.10 for LOS, p>0.10 for Home discharge)
Conclusions: Late in the day admission had no impact on LOS, FIM change or Discharge Setting. Further studies in additional settings are needed.
Level of Evidence: Level IV
