Puerto Rican Spanish Cross-cultural Adaptation and Measurement Properties of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament-Return to Sport After Injury (ACL-RSI) Scale

Ana M. Ortiz-Santiago, MD (University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois)

Meeting: AAPM&R Annual Assembly 2021

Categories: Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine (2021)

Session Information

Session Title: Research Spotlight: Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine

Session Time: None. Available on demand.

Disclosures: Ana M. Ortiz-Santiago, MD: No financial relationships or conflicts of interest

Objective: To culturally adapt the anterior cruciate ligament-return to sport after injury (ACL-RSI) Spanish scale into Puerto Rican Spanish and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Puerto Rican Spanish version in individuals who have undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Design: Descriptive StudySetting : Sports Medicine clinics at the Salud Deportiva y Ciencias del Ejercicio (SADCE) clinics in Salinas, Puerto Rico.Participants : Eleven amateur and semi-professional athletes who underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction completed the adapted scale, as well as a questionnaire regarding demographic characteristics. Statistical analysis included internal reliability testing and exploratory factor analysis.

Interventions: N/A

Main Outcome Measures: ACL-RSI-Sp Puerto Rican Spanish version questionnaire

Results: The ACL-RSI-Sp Puerto Rican Spanish version showed acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.9) and temporal stability (test–retest r = 0.9). Confidence in performance (1) insecurity (2), and fear (3) explained 83.9% of the total variance in the ACL-RSI Puerto Rican Spanish version. Conclusions: ACL-RSI Puerto Rican Spanish questionnaire represented a comparable and reliable instrument, with satisfactory psychometric properties similar to those obtained by the authors of the original Spanish version and adaptations to other languages. Further scale adaptation may address the cultural variations within the Spanish language, facilitating the accurate assessment of the psychological and emotional factors surrounding anterior cruciate ligament rehabilitation.

Level of Evidence: Level II
