Meeting: AAPM&R Annual Assembly 2019

Session Information

Date: Saturday, November 16, 2019

Session Title: Spine and Pain Research Report

Session Time: 11:15am-12:45pm

Location: Research Hub - Kiosk 7

Disclosures: Marc P. Gruner, DO, MBA, RMSK: Nothing to disclose

Objective: Identify the relationship in a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) clinic as determined by the validated functional outcome measure, the Modified – Oswestry Disability Index (m-ODI) with respect to the total spine related costs associated at the 3- and 6-month mark.

Design: Retrospective review

Setting: Single site outpatient PM&R clinic

Participants: N = 234

Interventions: Not applicable

Main Outcome Measures: m-ODI % at the time of initial visit to PM&R clinic. Total cost of spine care at 3 and 6 months.

Results: There was a direct correlation between increased disability as measured by (m-ODI) and total cost of spine care at 3 months and 6 months.

Conclusions : The m-ODI is an extremely important tool that researchers and disability evaluators use to measure a patient’s permanent functional disability. This measure is considered the ‘gold standard’ of low back functional outcome tools. We connected this outcome measure to our EHR system to help understand relationships with total cost of care for spine patients. This is one of the very few studies examining total cost of care of spine patients in a Physiatry clinic. This study will help establish episodes of care for spine patients as there is a greater push to value based care being paid for in episodes of care.

Level of Evidence: Level III
