Session Title: Annual Assembly Late Breaking Posters (Non Presentations)
Session Time: 11:15am-12:45pm
Location: Research Hub - Kiosk 8
Disclosures: Tiffany N. Su, MD: No financial relationships or conflicts of interest
Objective: To establish a correlation between the 9-hole peg test (9-HPT) and the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (mJOA) score in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM).
Design: Prospective, single-blinded observational pilot trial.
Setting: West Los Angeles Veteran Affairs Healthcare Center Outpatient Spine Clinic.
Participants: We aim to study 64 patients who were referred for cervical stenosis to the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Healthcare Outpatient Multidisciplinary Neurosurgery clinic for evaluation.
Interventions: None
Main Outcome Measures: mJOA score and timed 9-HPT results.
Results: A total of 11 participants have been enrolled in the study thus far, all male and right-handed. The average age of the participants was 60.4. The mean 9-HPT score was 28.0 seconds (range 20.4-38.7). Ten of the 11 patients with CSM had a prolonged preoperative 9-HPT score, above the normal level for age-and sex-matched individuals. There was a strong negative correlation between the 9 HPT and upper limb mJOA score (r=-0.7, P=.008) and between the 9-HPT and total mJOA score (r=-0.68, P=.021).
Conclusions: The preliminary data show that the 9 HPT scores were prolonged in CSM and showed a correlation with the upper limb mJOA score and total mJOA score. This suggests that the 9 HPT may be a useful objective tool to assess the severity of CSM in patients with cervical stenosis.
Level of Evidence: Level II
