Session Time: 11:15am-12:45pm
Location: Research Hub - Kiosk 2

Case Description: Diagnostic ultrasound is a powerful tool that can be a complement to a physiatrist in training. The program developed in conjunction with a resident and program director was a 5-month diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound track where residents had the option to enroll in. At the end of the specialized track, and with at least 150 diagnostic ultrasound reports (requirement for certification), residents were required to obtain certification through Registered in Musculoskeletal® (RMSK®) sonography certification demonstrating proficiency in diagnostic ultrasound.
Setting: ACGME Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency (PM&R)
Assessment/Results: Our first resident was able to obtain his RMSK certification and help teach the next cohort of residents diagnostic ultrasound.
Discussion: Research has demonstrated that ultrasound is an important tool to aid in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for physiatrists. From improving accuracy in physical exams, to understanding pertinent anatomy, to providing accurate interventions for sports, spine, and neurotoxin administration, ultrasound has applications in all parts of a physiatrist’s education. Part of the AAPM&R’s missions is to increase education with residents and faculty in the use of ultrasound. This project is the first to demonstrate a standardized path for formal ultrasound training in residency.
Conclusion: This is the first project to our knowledge that tested the feasibility of a diagnostic ultrasound track during PM&R residency. Our first applicant was able to obtain his RMSK certification and has helped teach the next cohort of residents. This could be a strategy to fulfill AAPMR’s mission to increase use of ultrasound among faculty and residents nationally.
