Session Title: Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine Research Report
Session Time: 12:30pm-2:00pm
Location: Research Hub - Kiosk 8
Disclosures: Bo Song, MD: Nothing to disclose
Objective: To determine the efficacy of Leukocyte-Rich Platelet Rich Plasma (LR-PRP) in different stages of knee osteoarthritis (OA) as measured by range of motion (ROM) and pain.
Design: Retrospective chart review.
Setting: Outpatient clinic.
Participants: 10 patients (5 males and 5 females) ages 54-77.
Interventions: We injected LR-PRP into a total of 16 knees and monitored improvement over 24 weeks by assessing ROM and pain scores.
Main Outcome Measures: Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for Pain, Range of Motion in Knee Flexion, Kellgren Lawrence Scale for Knee OA Grading.
Results: We found an average ROM improvement in knee flexion of 9.43% with a standard deviation of 7.25%. 5 knees demonstrated noticeable improvement in ROM at 3 months with 6 knees showing continued improvement at up to 24 months post-injection. For pain, the average VAS score improvement was 58.7% with a standard deviation of 32.6%. 12 knees demonstrated improvement in pain at 3 months with 6 knees showing improvement at up to 24 months. Patients with Kellgren Lawrence Score of 2 exhibited the most improvement in both ROM and pain, with an average improvement of 9.10% and 69.09%, respectively. Two patients were lost to follow up.
Conclusions: LR-PRP for knee osteoarthritis is safe and effective in improving range of motion and pain at both early and late timepoints. Patients with more mild OA as demonstrated by the Kellgren Lawrence Scale tend to have more favorable outcomes.
Level of Evidence: Level IV
