Session Time: None. Available on demand.
Disclosures: Jayesh Vallabh, MD, MBA: No financial relationships or conflicts of interest
Objective: To decrease the frequency of same-day procedure cancellations and treatment plan changes secondary to COVID-19 vaccination.
Design: The intervention implemented involved the ordering physician to add an EPIC dot phrase to the procedure order in the scheduling instructions section for any procedure involving steroid administration.Setting : Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (Academic Medical Center)Participants : Patients set to have interventional injections containing steroid
Interventions: The EPIC dot phrase was a script that the scheduling staff read to the patient to explain how to schedule their injection around their planned vaccinations. The relative frequency of same-day cancellations in one provider’s clinic due to vaccination before and after intervention were compared.
Main Outcome Measures: Number of patients screened and rescheduled to not conflict with vaccine administration vs patients that were not screened and had to be canceled the day of the procedure
Results: Before intervention, 10 of 32 patients scheduled for corticosteroid injections were affected by the timing of their scheduled vaccinations resulting in same-day changes to their treatment plan. After intervention, 0 of 13 patients were scheduled for corticosteroid injections in a way that required same-day changes to their treatment. Conclusions: Adding pertinent scheduling instructions for patients who are seeking corticosteroid injections during this time of COVID-19 vaccination distribution has decreased same-day changes to patient’s treatment plans.
Level of Evidence: Level IV
