Session Information
Session Title: Research Spotlight: General Rehabilitation
Session Time: None. Available on demand.
Disclosures: Kirill Alekseyev, MD, EMBA: No financial relationships or conflicts of interest
Objective: To determine the benefit of acute rehabilitation in COVID clear patients in addition to the changes of the current treatment related to COVID-19.
Design: Cohort StudySetting : Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation HospitalParticipants : 55 patients total
Interventions: Functional Independence Measures (FIM) were obtained at admission and discharge. Patients received physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), and speech therapy. In addition to the Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapists, Internists and Physiatrists provided and modified individualized care.
Main Outcome Measures: The length of acute rehabilitation and the impact on the patient’s over FIM score. Measure scores on admission and discharge. There was an increase in the FIM outcomes because of the acute rehabilitation. Care model scoring in addition to frequently monitoring the patients overall functional assessment. Having internal medicine follow patients for symptom resolution. Utilizing acute OT, PT, and speech therapy to properly score patients.
Results: Overall, acute rehabilitation had significantly improved patient’s FIM outcomes in their overall functional assessment. Conclusions: Acute rehabilitation plays a largely positive role in the outcome of patients with COVID-19. This can be calculated by monitoring their overall assessment of activities of daily living with PT, OT, and speech therapists. The mean length of stay in the Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital was 12 days and the average increase in FIM score outcomes was 29. This increase in the FIM score can be attributed to the different therapies provided during their acute inpatient rehabilitation.
Level of Evidence: Level V
