Adrian Cristian, MD, MHCM (Miami Cancer Institute, Miami, Florida)

Meeting: AAPM&R Annual Assembly 2021

Categories: General Rehabilitation (2021)

Session Information

Session Title: AA 2021 Virtual Posters - General Rehabilitation

Session Time: None. Available on demand.

Disclosures: Adrian Cristian, MD, MHCM: Elsevier and Springer Medical Publishers (Products/Services: No) (Royalties)

Objective: The objective of this study was to characterize the physical function status as well as physical impairments often seen in Hispanic women with breast cancer.

Design: Retrospective chart reviewSetting : Outpatient Cancer Center in large urban cityParticipants : 322 Hispanic women with breast cancer (HWBC) and a comparison group of 60 non-Hispanic women with breast cancer (NHWBC)

Interventions: Not applicable

Main Outcome Measures: Self-reported outcome-Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS)-Physical Function (PF) and Fatigue (F) questionnaires, Timed Up and Go test (TUG), Sit to Stand in 30 seconds test (STS30), Four stage balance test (4SB) and grip strength (GS) using a hand held dynamometer; Presence of lymphedema, shoulder dysfunction and peripheral neuropathy.

Results: Hispanic women with breast cancer: TUG was significantly prolonged in 47 (16%); STS was significantly reduced in 152 (50.5%); GS was significantly decreased in 87 (61%); PF score was significantly decreased in 44 (14%) F score was significantly decreased in 15 (5%); 4SB: 95 (30.8%) were unable to stand on one foot >5 seconds; There were no statistically significant differences between the HWBC and NHWBC with the exception of the 4SB, which was more impaired for the former when compared to the latter (p=0.012). Mean BMI for the HWBC was 29.8±6.2 and for the HWBC was 28.9±5. Cancer Related Impairments: 55.6% of the Hispanic women had shoulder dysfunction, 22.4% had lymphedema and 17.1% had peripheral neuropathy. Conclusions: Hispanic women with breast cancer have significant physical function impairments that can have an adverse impact on quality of life. Clinicians caring for this population of patients should screen for the presence of physical function decline, fatigue as well as shoulder, dysfunction, lymphedema and peripheral neuropathy.

Level of Evidence: Level III
