Session Title: Spine and Pain Research Report
Session Time: 11:15am-12:45pm
Location: Research Hub - Kiosk 7
Disclosures: Francis P. Lagattuta, MD: Nothing to disclose
Objective: To determine the pain patterns in patients with length dependent and non-length dependent small fiber neuropathy.
Design: Retrospective Cohort
Setting: Pain management clinic.
Participants: 111 patients meeting criteria for Small Fiber Neuropathy (SFN), including an ‘abnormal’ Epidermal Nerve Fiber Density (ENFD) test. The patients attended the pain clinic for a variety of musculoskeletal complaints
Interventions: Not applicable.
Main Outcome Measures: ENFD test results and pain drawing
Results: A total of 111 patients. 45 patients (40.54%) have non-length dependent SFN. Of those 45 patients, 11 patients (24.44%) have axial pain, 7 patients (15.56%) present peripheral pain, and 27 patients (60%) have both. 65 patients (58,56%) of the total sample (111) have length dependent SFN. Of those 65 patients, 16 patients (24.62%) have axial pain, 5 patients (7.69%) peripheral pain, and 44 patients (67.69%) both.
Conclusions: Rarely will patients only complain of distal burning, tingling, and pain in the extremities. This paper shows that most patients will complain of diffused pain throughout their body even if it is length dependent. For patients to have complete resolution of their pain, the correct diagnoses and appropriate treatments need to be done for all of their conditions.
Level of Evidence: Level III
