Session Title: Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine Research Report
Session Time: 12:30pm-2:00pm
Location: Research Hub - Kiosk 8
Disclosures: Tiffany M. Lau, MD: Nothing to disclose
Objective: To determine the barriers that prevent individuals from participating in an adaptive sports program and the best approach to integrating medical care into an established adaptive sports program.
Design: This study is survey research. All portions of the study followed the IRB guidelines.
Setting: Patients followed as outpatients or previous inpatients, participating in an adaptive sports program ×1/week for at least 8 weeks.
Participants: Patients were pre-selected by Physical, Occupational and Recreational Therapists and screened for eligibility by Physiatrists. Patients attended an adaptive sports event once a week for 8 weeks. Full participation was considered attendance in 4-8 sessions in the 8-week time period.
Interventions: Patients were asked to complete a survey. Example questions: 1) What were the reasons that you were unable to attend? (i.e. no transportation, illness, or etc.) 2) How often do you feel the events should occur? 3) How would you rate your experience on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best and 1 being the worst? 4) What was your satisfaction with the medical care/ participation screening? (1-10) 5) What was your satisfaction with medical coverage at the adaptive sports events? (1-10) 6) If you could improve the program what changes would you like to see?
Main Outcome Measures: Categorizing the barriers participants faced into the most common cause.
Results: Top 5 common barriers adaptive sports participants faced.
Conclusions: It is important to address the barriers that prevent individuals from participating in adaptive sports. By beginning the conversation with participants as to what is their most common barrier, we can begin to break down these barriers. This study will enable us to address the patient’s level of knowledge, tailor the program for the participants, and offer sports events of interest. Future plans are to intervene on these barriers and distribute a post-intervention survey.
Level of Evidence: Level IV
