Session Title: Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine Research Report
Session Time: 12:30pm-2:00pm
Location: Research Hub - Kiosk 8
Disclosures: Lauren N. Neuman, DO, MBA: Nothing to disclose
Objective: We performed a systematic review of current literature to determine the evidence supporting the standard of care, treatments, and rehabilitation approaches for sports related concussion.
Design: Following electronic search of multiple databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, CINAHL, and Cochrane Review, we found 12 papers out of 4004 between 2008-2018 with a sample population of ages 12-25 that studied sports related concussion less than 3 months prior to the original study.
Setting: This systematic review of the literature included case studies, consensus recommendations, literature reviews, and original research.
Participants: Ages 12-25 that studied sports related concussion less than 3 months prior to the original study.
Interventions: Physical therapy, light aerobic exercises, neuropharmacology interventions, vestibular and oculomotor therapy
Main Outcome Measures: .
Results: Physical therapy interventions were shown to facilitate recovery and improve function. Furthermore, light aerobic exercises were also shown to improve symptoms after 6 weeks of training in those who were slow to recover from to concussion symptoms. However, other reviewers concluded that there is moderate evidence to suggest the use of cognitive rest as well as physical rest in those recovering from concussion. For example, prescribed physical and cognitive rest may benefit post-concussion cognitive function and symptoms in adolescents. Neuropharmacology interventions were limited but revealed that amantadine could help improve sports related symptoms such as visual memory and reaction time in the subacute period following a sports concussion. Results showed insufficient evidence to recommend either for, or against, vestibular and oculomotor therapy in the reviewed population.
Conclusions: There is a lack of literature supporting clear guidelines for treatment of sports related concussion with evidence-based medicine.
Level of Evidence: Level I
